Referral Process

Your dentist may decide that you need advanced endodontic care, or a root canal, and offer to refer you to AS Endodontics. Alternatively, you may ask your dentist to be referred specifically to AS Endodontics.

We accept referrals from all practitioners as well as direct patient self-referrals from Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland. Our aim is to see you as quickly as possible.

Appointments

Once your referral is received you will be contacted for a consultation appointment as soon as possible to help minimise your discomfort. We should already have an x-ray of your tooth/teeth from your referring dentist so early decision-making and appropriate timings can be assessed. A further x-ray or CBCT scan may be required to assist with the diagnosis.

During your consultation we will confirm the diagnosis and ensure that you are informed of the options available with their respective pros, cons, costs and likely prognosis. You will have the opportunity to ask questions during the consultation.

If you decide to proceed with the root canal treatment further appointments will be arranged with the clinic.

Please be assured that all treatment plans are checked and discussed by the team ensuring the most effective treatment plan has been devised.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as Endodontic therapy or root canal therapy, is a sequence of treatments for the infected pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection (caused by bacteria) and the protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion. Root canal treatment is essentially a means of trying to save a tooth that has been damaged by deep decay, breakage, or infection. The purpose of treatment is to restore the tooth to good health so that it can function properly inside your mouth.

Preliminary treatment to remove the decay and the source of infection of the pulp is necessary, along with a determination of whether the lost tooth structure can be restored. If a fracture of the tooth has reached the pulp, or infection is associated with gum disease, it could be more difficult, if not impossible, to save the tooth.

The Endodontic, root canal, treatment

Root canal treatment may be completed in one appointment but usually two or three visits may be necessary.

With the use of modern techniques root canal therapy typically involves little or no discomfort. Often there is pain before treatment and endodontic therapy provides relief.

With proper restoration and care of your tooth it may last many years after root canal treatment. Proper dental care includes regular brushing and flossing, proper diet and periodic dental check-ups.

It is important that you continue to attend your own dentist for general dental care.
